Many people today appreciate a little show
of magic in their parties and thus close up magician are a lot in demand and
they are also available in a lot of choices readily available for every person
and for each and every sort of party.
A good competition act should be original
in some way; it should also play to the audience that is watching. In most
cases this will be an audience of magicians and in my opinion this should be
recognised. Some of the best competition acts have taken standard tricks and
changed them in a way that is most entertaining to magicians and those
knowledgeable about magic.
In fact many a close up magician has failed
to make their mark because they performed genuine close up magic in these
situations. Good close up magic can look very small and insignificant when
performed in a large room with many people watching even if you have the luxury
of a big screen.
If I were to give advice to the aspiring
competition winner I would say play to the room. Make the tricks big enough to
work without the screen. Keep the props off the table top and try and get them
above waist height.
If it bothers you that it is not close up
magic then you are not playing the game. The game is to win!
